This was Moyesball at its most effective. West Ham never looked like letting the points out of their grasp once they were in front. David Moyes’s side simply swarmed all over Manchester United, making it horrible, feeding off a passionate London Stadium crowd, and the worry for Erik ten Hag will be that his side’s latest stumble could not be explained simply by pointing to David de Gea’s mistake for the goal that breathed life back into the race to qualify for the Champions League.
United were loose in all areas. If the first quarter of the match was about their profligacy in the final third the rest of it was defined by the absence of any response after Saïd Benrahma’s soft opener midway through the opening period.
In the end United looked drained, West Ham simply outmuscling them at times. There was a late flurry, Anthony Martial twice threatening a dramatic equaliser, but that was a deception. The truth is that Moyes deserved this triumph over his former employers and, while United still have a game in hand over Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp’s side will fancy their chances of stealing fourth after cutting the gap to a point.
United’s second away defeat in the space of three days was further evidence that their momentum is fading after a draining season. They had zero leadership from their captain, Bruno Fernandes, whose final contribution was to waft a dreadful shot over the bar. They had nothing from Wout Weghorst and Antony. Even Marcus Rashford’s finishing was below par and, with the attack so short of bite, the last thing Ten Hag needed was for De Gea to add to his growing portfolio of errors.
West Ham did a job on Ten Hag’s side, Declan Rice pocketing Fernandes, their commitment and organisation impressive. This was a return to the resilience of old. Moyes has seen West Ham make too many individual errors, but not here. Victory moved the Scot’s side seven points above the bottom three and, away from the battle to stay up, filled them with confidence before the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.
For Moyes, there was much to take from his back four coping without the injured Kurt Zouma, Michail Antonio pummelling United’s defence and Tomas Soucek’s appetite for the battle seeing the Czech midfielder end with a bloodied head after he denied Aaron Wan-Bissaka a late equaliser.
Of course, the game could have gone in a different direction. United began well, their defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion seemingly out of their system, but their tendency to squander dominant positions is a recurring issue. Rashford was the first to disappoint, bending wide after surging away from Angelo Ogbonna and linking with Christian Eriksen, and there would be more to come. West Ham were passive and United should have punished them. Fernandes and Eriksen went close from long range. Antony, fired wide after being played in by Weghorst.
The fifth opening went to Rashford, bursting past Thilo Kehrer before striking the woodwork, but then came a lull. West Ham stirred. The hosts had isolated Casemiro on a couple of occasions and they had also seen skittishness in De Gea, Weghorst intervening when the United goalkeeper sent a pass straight to Rice.
West Ham stepped up their pressing and Luke Shaw lost possession to Benrahma. United were on the retreat, though there was still no panic. Benrahma was outnumbered and a long way out. There was no venom from the winger when he tried an early shot from 25 yards; he must have been as surprised as anyone when a backpedalling De Gea, diving in stages, collapsed to his right and pushed the ball into the net.

West Ham had barely threatened; now they were alive. They remained compact and pounced on the break. Antonio broke and made a chance for Jarrod Bowen. Benrahma tested De Gea and West Ham should have had a penalty when Victor Lindelöf handled the winger’s cross just before half-time.
United were unravelling. Antony struck the left post with a deflected effort but a sense of injustice burned through West Ham at the start of the second half. Rice and Soucek were shutting everything down after missing the defeat to Manchester City because of illness. Lucas Paqueta’s influence in attacking midfield grew.
West Ham went for a second, Rice fizzing a ball across the face of goal, Soucek warming De Gea’s palms. De Gea flapped and Antonio bundled the ball in, only to be penalised for a push. Ten Hag responded by replacing Weghorst with Martial.
Yet Nayef Aguerd, who was also too unwell to play against City, had a fine game alongside Ogbonna in central defence. Kehrer was tough at right-back. Aaron Cresswell kept Antony quiet. West Ham were rugged, Antonio terrorising United. Lucas Paqueta blazed wide, Soucek had a goal disallowed for offside. United woke up near the end. Lukasz Fabianski tipped over from Rashford and there was a long delay after Soucek and Wan-Bissaka clashed heads. The board showed eight added minutes. Martial shot at Fabianski and headed wide but it was West Ham’s night.

Lukasz Fabianski – 7. Commanded his area well, rushing out to deny Man United’s forwards on several occasions. A very tidy display
Thilo Kehrer – 7. Gave away one or two cheap fouls, but the Germany international was defensively solid in the absence of Vladimir Coufal at right-back
Nayef Aguerd – 8. West Ham’s most impressive defender on the night, stepping out of the backline intelligently at times to disrupt United attacks. A promising performance from the Moroccan
Angelo Ogbonna – 7. A solid if unspectacular outing, with the centre-back maintaining good positional discipline throughout. He was also vital in the air as the visitors whipped in several menacing crosses late on.
Aaron Cresswell – 7. Provided great energy down the left channel, although too often his smart runs forward were ignored by teammates. Cresswell’s shepherding of Antony was also impressive, with the Brazilian’s only real joy coming from central positions
Tomas Soucek – 8. Looked a real threat in the final third, coming close to scoring with a half-volley in the second half. Having netted against Crystal Palace last time out, the Czech midfielder looks to have rediscovered his best form.
Declan Rice – 9. Another sublime display from the captain, whose positional awareness and plugging of holes defensively was decisive. He also had one or two moments of brilliance in going forward, showcasing his close control and ability to pick a pass.
Jarrod Bowen – 7. A willing runner for the Hammers, working hard out of possession, all while trying to stretch the play with sprints in behind the away side’s defence.
Lucas Paqueta – 7. Improved as the game wore on, becoming West Ham’s creative hub in the second half. While his end product was slightly subpar, his movement caused Man United all sorts of problems throughout.
Said Benrahma – 7. Scorer of the game’s only goal, with his speculative effort from range forcing a dreadful error out of David de Gea. While he was quiet for large spells, there were some moments of real quality whenever the forward got to the by-line.
Michail Antonio – 8. The big man up front was a real handful, driving his side forward repeatedly with determined and powerful ball carries. His biggest contribution was winning the ball back for Benrahma’s opener – a richly deserved reward for his consistent efforts out of possession.

Moyes’ man-management key as West Ham beat Manchester United to edge towards survival

There were high fives in the boardroom, euphoria in the stands, relief on the touchline and celebrations to Wild Thoughts by DJ Khaled in the dressing room following a performance that reminded everyone what this West Ham United team is capable of.
The 1-0 victory over Manchester United, courtesy of Said Benrahma’s solitary goal, leaves David Moyes’ side seven points clear of the relegation zone with three league games remaining against Brentford, Leeds United and Leicester City. Historically, the traditional guarantee of safety has been 40 points. But with West Ham on 37 and given how woeful the teams below them have been, one can assume the objective of survival has been fulfilled.
Declan Rice, Nayef Aguerd and Tomas Soucek returned to the starting XI. The trio recovered from stomach bugs which forced them to miss the 3-0 loss away to Manchester City. Rice, in particular, was ubiquitous — and showed how much he’s improved at running at defenders.
Aguerd and central defensive partner Angelo Ogbonna restricted the attacking quartet of Marcus Rashford, Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst to two shots on target. Soucek was the Soucek of old — and were it not for offside, the midfielder would have scored one of the best team goals of the season.
But, most importantly, the win helps kickstarts an important week ahead of the upcoming Europa Conference semi-final first-leg tie against AZ Alkmaar.
“The significance of that win is massive,” Rice, the club captain, told BT Sport. “As players, you can’t help but look around and we knew a win would give us a nice gap between us and teams in the bottom.
“That was probably our best performance at home this season. The fans were electric. The semi-final is so big. Last year we got to one (semi-final), we know what it felt like. That’s what it’s all about: you want to win trophies. At West Ham, we haven’t won one for years, so we need to stamp our authority — what a massive achievement that would be for the club.”
Moyes’ man-management has been key in recent weeks. There have been times when he and his backroom staff have taken a step back and allowed the players to be accountable for disappointing performances. After the 5-1 loss to Newcastle United, the hairdryer treatment did not come into effect. Instead, he told the players that if he were them he would want to play the following day.
The personal touch has been particularly noticeable with Benrahma. The playmaker scored his tenth goal across all competitions on Sunday. But it was in late February when Moyes’ words had the desired effect. Benrahma provided two assists in the 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, and Moyes spoke to the attacker about his inconsistency. At that juncture, he was yet to score or register an assist in the league since the turn of the year, so Moyes challenged Benrahma to produce more hot performances. Since then, he has scored three times and in eight starts.
But there have been other key performers in West Ham’s bid for top-flight survival. Lucas Paqueta is belatedly showing why the club made him a €60million (£52.4m; $66.3m) record signing last summer. He scored in back-to-back games against Bournemouth and Liverpool — and some of the tricks and backheels he produced against Manchester United would have been worth the entrance fee alone.
Before the game, the Brazil international spoke about being appreciative of the support he has received from fans. It has not been an easy debut season, following a slow start and his outburst in the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa in March. But Moyes and his backroom staff have been rewarded for their patience.
“We praised Declan a lot there, I actually thought the three midfielders (played well); Tomas and Lucas have got the opportunity to be a really well-balanced midfield because they all offer different things,” said Moyes. “Paqueta showed magic moments and then some other bits not so good, but overall I think the balance of the three midfield players (was) very good.
“We know that Paqueta is capable of doing different jobs. The one thing I want him to do is make me chances, score me goals and be effective. I think we can give him the ball, (but) I want him to keep it better when he should do. He had a couple of opportunities in the game where he could’ve played people through, but I’m really pleased.”
In March, Moyes promised he would dance with Paqueta if West Ham win silverware this season. Now attention turns to the all-important match this Thursday, where there will be lessons learnt from last season’s Europa League semi-final first-leg loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.
It promises to be an exciting end to the season and, if the scenes after the win against Manchester United were anything to go by, we could be in store for more wild celebrations.

Defender’s day looks done at West Ham
Ben Johnson looks to be on his way out of West Ham this summer.
With the club now certainly safe from the drop negotiations will soon start on contract extensions and despite having an option on the academy product it looks highly unlikely he will be offered one.
It isn’t rocket science working out how Moyes feels about players and with just 15 Premier League appearances behind him this term – two since March – it would be a surprise were he to stay.
Kehrer took Vladi Coufal’s place at right back last night with Johnson appearing late on the left side.
He won’t be alone as a likely departure – possibly to Everton – as Manu Lanzini is another who has fallen out of favour with the manager although it would come as a surprise were the same fate to befall Oggy who has been in terrific form and was particularly impressive against Manchester United.

At a time when footballers have not been helping themselves, Declan Rice is different. Away from the pitch, he is a thoroughly decent person, a credit to his club, and in my view, the Premier League’s most likeable player.
You only needed to watch the video of Rice with a young fan after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Manchester United. He is crying. He doesn’t know why. But Rice treats like him like any captain should. He hugs him. He gifts him his shirt. He tells him he loves him.

Cynics will say he knew he was on camera. But this is just Rice. As anyone at West Ham will tell you, the 24-year-old from Kingston is the same when there are no smart phones pointing in his direction.
It’s the time he takes to speak to the young mascots before games because he knows they will be scared to walk out in front of 60,000 screaming supporters. It’s the greetings he’ll give you if you walk past him at West Ham’s training ground on press conference day.
It’s the traffic jam he creates at the gates as he makes sure every autograph hunter gets their selfie before he driving out on to Rush Green Road. It’s the detour to the Chadwell Heath academy ground so he can speak to their blossoming starlets like Ollie Scarles and Lewis Orford.
Credit must go to Rice how he has handled his first season as a club captain. Replacing Mark Noble was not an easy task, and word is he still needs to work on his rollickings, yet Rice has shown himself to be a total professional and all this is before we get to what he is doing on the pitch.
Sunday’s win could be Rice’s penultimate home Premier League game for West Ham. He is expected to leave in the summer, most likely for Arsenal, most likely for £100million.
West Ham think that is a fair asking price for the England midfielder whose contract expires in 2024 but with the option of an additional year.
Manager David Moyes was asked about Rice being admired by bigger clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea and United in his post-match press conference. He turned to his stock answer – yes, he is brilliant, and no, he will not be cheap.

Only one player in England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A, Germany’s Bundesliga and France’s Ligue 1 has managed 30-plus in interceptions, clearances, take-ons, chances created and shots – and that man is Rice.
Without him, West Ham would have been in bigger trouble this season. Sunday’s win all but secures Premier League safety and now they can concentrate on the Europa Conference League, with the first leg of their semi-final against AZ Alkmaar this Thursday.
When Noble retired at the end of last season, the dream was to win the Europa League so the club captain could depart on a high. West Ham fell at the semi-final stage of that competition.
If Rice is to leave – and any club that snatches him up will be lucky to do so – it would be fitting to see him lifting that Europa Conference League trophy in Prague on June 7.

West Ham United eyeing Marseille’s Mattéo Guendouzi as potential Declan Rice replacement

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, West Ham United are reportedly showing interest in Marseille midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi (24) as they anticipate the departure of Declan Rice in the upcoming summer transfer window. The England international is expected to leave the club amidst keen interest from Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Manchester United.
Rice’s contract with West Ham expires in 2024, with an option for a further year. However, the Hammers are bracing for his departure and have begun searching for a suitable replacement. West Ham has identified Guendouzi as a potential candidate to fill the midfield void left by Rice.
Guendouzi, who made 82 appearances for Arsenal between 2018 and 2020, joined Marseille after his tenure with the Gunners. The 24-year-old midfielder has earned seven caps for the French national team and has impressed during his time with Arsenal under then-manager Unai Emery. However, his relationship with Mikel Arteta soured towards the end of the 2019-20 season, leading to his move to Marseille.
The French midfielder has two years remaining on his Marseille contract and has performed well this season, contributing five goals and five assists in 40 appearances across all competitions. West Ham believes that Guendouzi’s previous experience in English football would make any transition back to the Premier League seamless.
